Maltese Care – Cleaning The Eyes
Maltese care is not something you can overlook. This breed needs constant grooming and attention. Without adequate care, the Maltese can suffer health problems and be uncomfortable. This is not fair to the dog, which is why it is essential that you are prepared for the full-time grooming job that comes along with owning this breed.
Aside from the necessary detangling, washing, trimming and brushing of the white Maltese coat, another important part of Maltese care and grooming is eye cleaning.
The Maltese are prone to Tear Stains. Tear stain is a term used to describe the dark reddish-brown stains that appear on the hair under the eyes of the Maltese, close to the tear ducts. These stains occur from excessive eye watering. You can help to reduce the staining by keeping your Maltese’s eyes cleaned daily and keeping his hair out of his eyes.
To clean your dog’s eyes, you will need a soft washcloth and warm water. Do not use soap or any other cleaning product, as you don’t want to risk irritating your dog’s eyes.
To begin this Maltese care procedure, lay your dog down beside you and gently hold on to his snout so he won’t jerk away, and you can do the job accurately. Talk to your dog in a soothing voice as you gently remove the discharge from his tear ducts and any gunk that has collected on his fur.
Once you are done cleaning his eyes, give him a treat as a reward.
Be prepared to receive a fight from your dog. Your Maltese will probably dislike having his eyes cleaned and will put up a fuss no matter how familiar he becomes with the process. Regardless of his behavior, remain patient and get it done as quickly as possible. If you do this form of Maltese care on a daily basis, it will take less time to perform the task, which is something both you and your dog can look forward to.
